Bubble O Bushranger collection – Artist statement
Growing up I always loved Ned Kelly stories – the landscapes, robberies and shootouts – it’s all so deliciously camp. With this body of work I’ve reimagined Bubble O Bill as 'Bubble O Bushranger' – our very own sugary gunslinging bushranger of the high country. Bringing these two unexpected icons together creates new narratives from well told Australian folklore. Is the Bubble O Bushranger a hero or villain? You decide. But in these heavy times, it’s comforting that we can all unite over refined cane sugar and questionable grades of food colouring.
Artist note: I read somewhere that at the Kelly Gang’s last stand in Glenrowan Ned Kelly had bullet holes in his legs after the iconic deadly battle with the police. Pretty gory, huh? So I thought I'd pay homage to that by applying more of Bubble O Bill’s iconic hat bullet holes to his neckerchief and ice cream stick.
